Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonic Acid (LABSA) & Salts

LABSA is produced by the sulfonation of linear alkyl benzene with SO3. The resultant sulfo acid is sold as is or neutralized with sodium hydroxide to produce Sodium LAS powder or solution. A&W LABSA is derived from low (15-20%) 2-phenyl isomer. Customers will need to investigate any formulation impact if using to substitute for high 2-phenly (25- 30%) isomer derivatives.

Comments
Surfactant Type
Anionic
Detergency/Cleansing Capacity
High
Flash Foaming
Moderate flash foam, low foam stability
Electrolyte Tolerance
Low – need to measure Kraft point of solutions.
Salt Viscosity Building
Low – preferable to thicken using Cocamide DEA rather than salt.
Skin Mildness
Not recommended for skin care applications.
Sustainability
Biodegradable according OECD “Ready Biodegradability” tests 301, 301D or 301E. Technically equivalent test to ISO 10707
pH Stability
Stable over entire pH range.Unlike FAES, sodium salts do not hydrolyse.
Stability
LABSA as supplied will darken over time.Sodium LAS powder is very hygroscopic and must be stored protected from rain and moisture. All forms are chemically stable
Phase Structure LABSA : Low Active (LESS THAN 30%)
Clear low viscosity solutions @ 20°C, miscible with water and easily pumped.
Phase Structure LABSA : Medium Active (30 - 92%)
Viscous gel, impossible to pump or mix.
Phase Structure LABSA : High Active ( GREATER THAN 94%)
Clear viscous liquid. Not shear thinning. Easily pumped with mono or lobe pump
Phase Structure LABSA : Concentrations between 30 – 92%
Concentrations between 30 – 92% active are possible by diluting with solvent such as ethanol or propylene glycol
Phase Structure Sodium LAS Liquids: Very Low Active (LESS THAN 20%)
Clear low viscosity solutions @ 20°C, miscible with water and easily pumped.
Phase Structure Sodium LAS Liquids: Low Active (20 – 30%):
Increasing viscosity and kraft point. Opaque liquids at 25°C.
Phase Structure Sodium LAS Liquids: Medium Active (45 - 50%):
White thixotropic gel. Easily pumped with mono or lobe pump.
Phase Structure Sodium LAS Liquids: High Active (GREATER THAN 94)
Clear viscous liquid. Not shear thinning. Easily pumped with mono or lobe pump
Sodium LAS Powder: Powder detergent base (HS80)
80% Sodium LAS with 5% STPP. Can be converted to liquids but these will be hazy due to the electrolyte content of the powder base.
Sodium LAS Powder: Powder detergent base (HS73)
73% Sodium LAS without STPP. Can be converted to liquids but these will be hazy due to the electrolyte content of the powder base.
LABSA Neutralisation
LABSA can be readily neutralized in-situ during batch manufacture. Add water and nuetralising agent to manufacturing vessel. Add LABSA at a steady rate and mix till fully dissolved. Neutralisation is exothermic. Check and adjust pH as necessary. For laundry liquids containing optical brightener, the optical brightener should be dissolved in the water before adding neutralizing agent.
